JAPAN (Nihon, Nippon)
Japan is the 4th island country in the Asia and the largest island country in East Asia. It is bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, and spans more than 3,000 kilometers along the coast of the continent from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Philippine Sea in the south. Japan has to 6,852 islands extending along the Pacific coast. It is over 3,000 km long from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Philippine Sea in the Pacific Ocean. The country, including all of the islands it controls, lies between latitudes 24° and 46°N, and longitudes 122° and 146°E. The five main islands, from north to south, are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Okinawa. The Ryukyu Islands, which include Okinawa, are a chain to the south of Kyushu. The Nanpo Islands are south and east of the main islands of Japan. Together they are often known as the Japanese Archipelago.
